Loserville Previews… Mysterious Skin @ The Drill Hall
Loserville is getting its serious face ready… There, its on.
Seven years after the Venice Film Festival Premiere of Gregg Araki’s incredible film adaptation, the stage version of Scott Heim’s 1996 novel Mysterious Skin hits The Drill Hall in September for just three shows.
The film, which featured Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Brady Corbet, pulled few punches in depicting the atrocity of pedophilia and child abuse, and its effects on the victims. It was one of the must-see indie films of 2005, and picked up a solid following despite the sombre subject matter and limited mainstream exposure.
Now, director Peter Darney brings the stage version to The Drill Hall, fresh from the Dublin Gay Theatre Festival, although it must be said that this story deserves a far wider audience than the gay community. The message cuts across boundaries of sexuality and gender, and honestly, painfully explores the truth and heartbreak of the great unspeakable sin.
We can’t wait – it won’t be a joy-ride, a fun-fest, a laugh-a-minute rib-tickler. But it is one of those events that you can describe as ‘important’ without being an arse. This is important theatre, for a grown up audience.
And you’ve got three chances to catch it.
They say:
“Played perfectly under Peter Darney’s nuanced direction… Theatre for grown ups. Stunning. *****” Broadway Baby
“A powerful story that is both horrifying an beautiful. You HAVE to see this play. *****” The New Current
