F*ck the Odeon! – Here’s our top 5 alternative cinema spots in London
We’re sharing out top 5 secret (/cheap) cinemas in London…they are odd, quirky and utterly brilliant experiences:
…
Deptford Film Club: We fell in love with this film club when we saw the bonkers, kitsch classic ‘Les Desmoiselles de Rochefort’ a while ago. The screen was a sheet taped to the wall and we sat on church pews eating lovely chips. Apparently they’ve got a bit more professional now and they show films fortnightly on Wednesdays at 7.30pm. The next on is on Weds 20th October 2010 and they’re showing 60s British east end classic, Bronco Bullfrog. Their website is ace and their selections unbeatable…check it out here
Prince Charles Cinema: The original cheap and cheerful central London cinema experience showing an eclectic mix of old and (relatively) new cult classics.
We used to love Sing-a-long-a Sound of Music…Catch another chance to watch the fantastically kooky Scott Pilgrim vs the World all next week…location is awesome too…just off Leicester Square. Their golden ticket promotion is super with tickets just £1…the film and booking info is announced here.
…
…
The Roxy Bar & Screen: This is a lovely space on Borough High Street, near London Bridge, perfect for watching kooky classics. We’re looking forward to Troll 2 on Sunday 17th Oct, 8pm, which is part of their new Bad Film Club slot: Troll 2 is a 1990 cult classic horror film. It is widely considered to be AWFUL. The film has a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, the film was rated as the worst film of all time by IMDB.com and the website Something Awful, which reviews bad films reckons that this really is the worst…
Made by a well meaning Italian horror director in Utah, with a amateur cast and English challenged crew, the film contains a lot plastic spears, but not a lot of trolls…The plot concerns an American family, the Waits, who are taking a trip to the country to visit a small town called “Nilbog” (goblin spelled backwards), but are plunged into a nightmare as they are relentlessly pursued by vegetarian goblins, who turn people into plants before they eat them. Oh Yes.
…
The Aubin Cinema: Beneath the mammoth Aubin & Wills preppy clothing store & gallery off Bethnal Green Road, Shoreditch, lurks a very cute cinema, which is perfect for secretly watching offbeat blockbusters (without having to brave your scally teenager filled local Cineworld). From Friday 22nd October 2010 they’re showing The Social Network so you can be uber geeky and watch Justin Timberlake ‘act’ in this lovely venue.
…
Whirled Cinema: Ok this is a blatant plug for the people who run the studios we live in atm. It’s a great members cinema & artists studio complex in Loughborough
Junction. The film selection is weird and wonderful, we’re looking forward to The Maid (more info below) which is on Thur 2nd, Fri 3rd & Sat 4th December (8.30pm).
The Maid, a quiet gem from Chile, is both a gripping psychological thriller and a poignant human drama. Catalina Saavedra plays Raquel, the live-in maid working for a well-to-do family in Santiago. When the family employs a secondary maid to help her with the chores, Raquel begins a sociopathic guerrilla war against the unfortunate new arrival and against the family itself. It’s dark, funny, and ultimately one of the best films you will see this year.

SECRET CINEMA ITSELF YOU IDIOTS
Which is now controlled by it’s principal sponsor Nokia.
It’s one thing to show a film in a pop-up cinema in an unorthodox & wonderful location, it is quite another to try to construct the WORLD of the film. Secret Cinema is the only organisation I know that does this, and that certainly does require money. In return you get loads of actors creating that world and ready and willing to interact to create amazing intimate moments with you (they need to be paid man!). They clearly spare no expense in the art & set department. It sure as hell isn’t like you can’t see where your money is going. Windows Phone marketing is inevitable, how else do you sustain something like this without corporate backing. I went to Bladerunner and Lawrence, the way the marketing was done was creative and engaged the audience in the world of the film.
This attack on the organisation for acquiring corporate sponsorship and supposedly undervaluing punters is unreasonable. It is blind to the modern world and to the nature of something like Secret Cinema as opposed to just ‘a film club’. It’s an EVENT!! You pay a fortune to go to Glastonbury and sleep in your own shit for God’s sake!! No one complains because it’s an epic EVENT, with a spirit. Secret Cinema is an EVENT, it creates A WORLD. I would advise people to really try to immerse themselves in it.
I think you’re quite right Public SECTOR worker, and I really value your opinion. Secret Cinema is awesome we just like to show some other offbeat cinema offerings.
We here at Loserville have been approached by corporate sponsors and have thought about the implications but would definitely consider it if it was to do something amazing as you suggest.
Thanks again for your comment and in honour of you we have removed the references to Secret Cinema.

ps. I think it would be great if the public sector/arts council sponsored great popular amazing events such as these.
pps. loserville is dedicated to the underdog and we try to promote things that are not already written about such as secret cinema which has a huge budget, my friend is on their payroll.
